Subject: Which one to choose?
I am responding to the posting on Sunday April 30 about which of four
songs from DG to put on a compilation tape for a friend.
Part of the problem is that we don't have a context. Have you included
any of the Butcher's loopy lyrics yet? If not, then Domestic Animal is a
must. Have you included any of Butch's faster material? If not, then
Hungarian Love Song is a must. See the problem? Without knowing what
you've already included, it's damn near impossible to know what else
needs to be included.
Plus, and this is a big plus, we don't know what sort of music your
friend normally listens to. Is this someone with fairly standardized
listening patterns, or someone who likes variety? The eclecticism of
Jazz Butcher is what most of his fans admire, but it's also his one
drawback in terms of larger popularity. Big mass audiences don't like
being surprised. They like to know exactly what their music will sound
like before they buy it. All this wondering about whether Illuminate
will sound like BP,SP, Love Bus, or Cult or like nothing else put out
before by the group would drive most music listeners bonkers.
Getting back to the issue at hand, DG was my introduction to The Jazz
Butcher Conspiracy, and it wholly converted me. I have since used it to
get others interested and find that it works the best for converting new
listeners. Since you have one side (30-60 minutes) and only four albums
to pull from, I would suggest using as much as possible from DG. then
after they're hooked, give them the harder stuff from Love Bus and BP,SP.
