Calm down folks, Calm down...Pat's been thinking about dropping the Butch
moniker since at least '92. I have an old newspaper clipping here that
mentions it. I'll go look. (Five frustrating minutes of searching later)
Drat. I can't find the last part of the article. Well it was in the St.
Catharines Standard in May 11 of '92. The really juicy part of the
article (Which is missing) basically says that he was considering
dropping the name, but he feared his loyal fans wouldn't have a clue who
he was. Remember that up until Condition Blue, he didn't even credit
himself on the album sleeves. Perhaps Pat's just looking at coming into
his own now. His past few albums have been relatively serious (though
still rife with charm and wit) and maybe it's time to put those great
drinking songs of his twenties behind him.
In the interview (what's left of it, at least) it reads:
"Many in Fish's North American cult are still hanging on his 1984
release, Bloody Nonsense ("Let 'em hang," says the Butcher), leaving
millions yet untouched by the Jazz Butcher's evolving, incisive wisdom."
A few days later, at his St. Catharines appearance at The Hideaway, he
stuck to his playlist throughout, despite many drunken bastards at the
back screaming "Play Catharine Wheels Birthday Present" To which he
replied matter of factly, "Her name is Caroline."
This also turned out to be a low point for me, a chance to meet Butch
that went horribly wrong as I drooled over his coveted steno pad of
lyrics, while trying to tell him how great an impact he had on my life.
He was sitting on the steps outside the bar, tuning his spiffy new tele.
I came off like one of those scary sycophant types and I'm sure he
arranged for extra security at his next few gigs, or while he was still
in Ontario at least. But he was really quite down to earth, and I felt
terrible about it for months, having so much respect for him and all.

Mine too, but I don't think I want to meet him again; I'd be too embarrassed.

Well, I wish him well, and I'll be on the lookout for his (hopefully)
up-coming solo material.
