I'm brand new to the list, so here goes my basic introduction of who I am
and my experiences with the jbc.
My name is Wayne Wise. I live in Pittsburgh. I found out abouth this
list through a friend who found it while browsing an FTP site. (He's also on
the list and has forwarded the posts from the last week or so).
I first discovered the Butcher in late "86". It was at a time when I
was being introduced to a lot of new music. In the middle of all of it "In
Bath of Bacon" came as a bit of an epiphany. After ascertaining just who it
was I rummaged through my roommates record collection to see if there were
any more albums by this Jazz Butcher person. He had pretty much the whole
collection up to that point on vinyl. I quickly made tapes and my love of
this music has continued. Much more than I can say for a lot of the stuff I
heard at that time. Since then I've managed to track down everything that's
available on disc.
I've seen Pat three times, all in Cleveland. (Although last time I saw
him there, during Condition Blue, he seemed pretty upset with the management.
I hope this hasn't caused to drop it from the itinerary. If so, consider
Pittsburgh. It'll save me a lot of driving). During the opening act of the
first show I was surprised to see Pat standing next to me in the crowd.
After the second show he came out to "Mingle with the natives", to use his
words. We hung out and talked for a while. I got a signature on my Scandel
in Bohemia/Sex and Travel disc. Pat was surprised to see a copy of it at
that time.
I haven't yet heard Illuminate. I've heard the four tracks on the
Sixteen Years single.
I'm going to throw in my story on the Meaning of the song "Angels".
This is what Pat said about it in concert. I apologize ahead if this is
something he'd rather not discuss. He said that it was about a friend of
his, a woman who had co-written the song "Big Saturday" with him, who had
died. This song has had much more of a resonnance with me since hearing
this. I can hear pain in his voice when he's singing "I wanna hold you in my
arms". As far as the dedication on the single being to his dead cat, (I'll
have to take your word on that; I haven't seen the single in years),
remember his usage of the word "Cats" on "Jazz Butcher Theme" on In Bath of
Bacon. For those of you who haven't heard it Pat says "I'd like to introduce
you to my cats..." then goes on to introduce the band. The song "girls say
yes" on Condition Blue ends with Pat saying "Maybe it's always Saturday in
Heaven... Just one Big Saturday in Heaven." I immediately thought that to
be a reference to this same woman.
Anyway, that's my take on it.
Several people on the list have said that Illuminate is a great album
for fans, but not the one to play to get converts. Any ideas on which album
is? I've tried most of them on friends and reactions have ranged from
indifference to active dislike. I don't understand what's not to like, but
we jbc fans are uncommonly rare.
Okay, I've taken too much space. I look forward to finally hearing from
other people about this stuff.
