Re: Southern Mark Smith and a lyric question

Similarly, I had always thought he was singing to a girl who was a fan of
the Fall and he was trying to "find out what makes [her] heart sing," hoping
it would be him, a Southern Mark Smith.
Now for a question that I'm sure is obvious to everyone but me: in The Human Jungle (my favorite JBC song), what is Max singing in the back of the chorus? Not the "And you don't ask why," but the variation of that in the second part of the chorus that sounds something like "Like an A ask why." I don't believe it's on the website. I've puzzled over it (intermittently, of course) for years.
