I may be way the heck off base, but I always interpreted the song lyrics as Pat comparing himself to a Southern Mark Smith - hence all the lines that say "LIKE a Southern Mark Smith..." As if maybe some review, audience member, etc. said he was like a Southern Mark Smith and he took it and ran with it. Cos I found out already what makes my heart sing...-NA
